Delta Agriculture
Part of the charm of the Delta is its isolation.
This is agricultural territory. Recreation is just
a by-product. The crops are varied,
and may change as the economy and conditions dictate.
Asparagus is a high-profile crop in San Joaquin County
and has spawned the highly popular Stockton Asparagus
Festival in April. Great orchards of pears grow along
the Sacramento River and the Courtland Pear Fair is
a big hit the last Sunday in July. There's corn for
as far as the eye can see on some islands. Delta-grown "Blue
Grass" sod from McDonald Island provides the greenery
for the new Giants Stadium in San Francisco. Endives
served in some of the finest restaurants come from
a farm near Rio Vista. More and more acreage is going
into grape vineyards, that help make the wines of the
area that are so highly respected. Tomatoes are still
a big Delta crop, and at harvest time the backroads
and highways are busy with trucks loaded with the tasty
red crop. Alfalfa is plentiful and you can catch its
odor and that of milo as you drive by the fields. Sugar
beets, rice, onions, carrots and pumpkins? Sure. |
